Mayor of Hawthorne Matt Surrency serves as the president of the Alachua County League of Cities and recently as the president of the Florida League of Cities. Surrency’s Florida Regional Compact Initiative priority as president of the Florida League of Cities has brought together cities, towns and villages around our state. In Alachua County, the nine cities are working together better than any time in history. Hawthorne has revitalized, including updating their infrastructure, gained control of finances, purchased conservation lands, preserved historically significant property and added jobs in the community.
“It is my hope that through this collaboration that all of our nine cities are able to provide a higher level of efficient and effective service to their citizens,” said Surrency.
Surrency is a Take Stock in Children mentor, signer of the Alachua County Education Compact, part of the Azalea Health board of directors, the National League of Cities board of directors, the Hawthorne Area Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Onsite Wastewater Association. He is also involved in the Florida Transportation Plan Steering Committee, Strategic Intermodal Systems Steering Committee, FDOT I-75 Relief Task Force, FLC Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee, NLC Community and Economic Development Committee, Alachua County Emerging Leaders and Friends of Little Orange Creek Nature Park.
