The operations manager at John Spence, LLC Mercedes Petrus said, “I choose people and causes based on what speaks to me, not what is fashionable, what is true to my heart. I serve these passions with grit, sweat, compassion and commitment.”
Petrus has been involved in Tyler’s Hope, supported the Ronald McDonald House since 2004, volunteered with Queen of Peace Catholic Church, served 4 years as office administrator, managed the thrift store for the Junior League and managed a video education project for the North Florida Community Foundation. She also volunteers at the ARC of Alachua County and the Gear Up Florida annual cycle trek to raise awareness for persons with disabilities.
Petrus remembers receiving “a call from a grandmother one week before Christmas and the organizations toy drive was over and she says, ‘I have 2 grandsons and they will have nothing for Christmas.’ I told her, ‘Come back tomorrow and you will have gifts for them.’ She did come back and she had 3 hefty bags overflowing with toys for her two grandsons.”
